Velupillay shines for Socceroos in A-League debut
Nishan Velupillay scored another goal for the Socceroos, helping the team secure a 2-0 win over China and move closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. This victory marked Velupillay’s second goal in two matches, while his Melbourne Victory teammate Ryan Teague made an impressive debut.
In the match held in Hangzhou, Velupillay and Jackson Irvine found the back of the net in the first half, solidifying Australia’s position in Group C, just three points behind Saudi Arabia.
After the game, Velupillay shared his thoughts with Paramount+, saying, “Any goal you’ll take. I feel like I get into the right positions now. I still have a lot to improve on, I know that. Just grateful to put on this shirt again.”
Ryan Teague, who started on debut for the Socceroos, expressed his pride in his performance and family. He mentioned, “I’ve gone through the ups and downs of football and to put on the jersey tonight and start for my country, it’s the proudest moment I’ve had so far.”
Teague, under the guidance of coach Tony Popovic, showed composure and played a crucial role in midfield. Popovic praised Teague’s debut, saying, “When you make your debut, you have a couple of great touches early on and it settles the nerves. He is a very level-headed young man. I know him well and he enabled some good balance for us in midfield.”
Looking ahead, the Socceroos’ Isuzu UTE A-League players, including Teague, Velupillay, and Arzani, will return to Melbourne for an exciting double-header against Adelaide United this weekend. As the team gears up for more matches, the future looks promising for the Victory players.
