Original Version of Star Wars Briefly Available for Streaming
Over the past weekend, a rare and special treat was available for those who happened to notice it: the original, unedited version of George Lucas’s 1977 Star Wars film was briefly streaming on the Roku app Cinema Box. That means no CG-enhanced characters, no subtitle, and yes, Han shoots first. It was a throwback to the version of the film that many fans grew up with and watched countless times on VHS tapes.
However, the joy was short-lived as the Cinema Box app with the original Star Wars was taken down from Roku. It was a brief glimpse into the past that reminded fans of the changes made in the 20th-anniversary release of the Special Editions, which became the standard versions available on TV, Disney+, and even in theaters. The only exception was a DVD release in 2006, which included the original, unaltered versions as special features.
According to Screenrant, the version that briefly appeared on Roku this past weekend was from this 2006 DVD release. Unfortunately, by March 4, both the original Star Wars and the Cinema Box app were gone from Roku.
For those who missed the opportunity to watch the original Star Wars, it sparked a discussion about the importance of preserving these versions that fans grew up with. While George Lucas and Disney have favored the Special Editions, many fans still hold a special place in their hearts for the originals they watched on TV or wore out on VHS tapes.
Despite the controversy over Greedo, Jedi Rocks, and the Endor Celebration, the Special Editions had a significant impact on the Star Wars franchise. Their success in theaters in 1997 inspired George Lucas to create the prequels, which revitalized interest in Star Wars and eventually led to Disney’s acquisition of the franchise.
As fans continue to debate the merits of the different versions of Star Wars, one thing is clear: the galaxy far, far away holds a special place in the hearts of many, no matter which version they prefer. And who knows, maybe one day the original, unaltered versions will have their moment in the spotlight once again.
