Marvel Producer Teases ‘Heartbreaking’ Ending for What If…? Season 3
The last episode of What If…? Season 3, which was available on Disney+ starting December 29, 2024, marked the conclusion of this unique Marvel series. What If…? stood out as the first animated series produced by Marvel Studios Animation, offering fans a fresh look at the Marvel multiverse through alternate versions of beloved characters.
In a recent interview, Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum shared his thoughts on the Season 3 finale, describing it as both “extremely satisfying” and “heartbreaking.” Winderbaum highlighted the show’s significant impact and how it paved the way for future Marvel Studios Animation projects like X-Men ’97, I Am Groot, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Marvel Zombies, all of which wouldn’t have been possible without What If…?.
Reflecting on the series, Winderbaum emphasized that What If…? was the catalyst for the creation of Marvel Studios Animation and the subsequent animated shows that followed. It was a bittersweet moment for him to see the show come to an end, calling it a beautiful culmination for the characters, especially the Watcher.
The final moments of What If…? saw Captain Peggy Carter making a heroic sacrifice to save her friends, with the Watcher guiding his fellow Watchers to understand the importance of learning from the various realities they observe. As the series wrapped up, Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm took on the responsibility of being the new Watchers of the multiverse, signaling a new chapter in the Marvel universe.
