Julia’s Stepping Stones Documentary Film now streaming on Netflix
Julia Reichert, a renowned filmmaker who sadly lost her battle with cancer in December 2022, left behind an incredible legacy in the world of cinema. Known for her impactful films like Union Maids and the Academy Award-winning American Factory, Julia was also a trailblazer as a founder of New Day Films, a filmmaker-owned distribution cooperative. In the years leading up to her passing, Julia began to share her personal story, which was later crafted into the film JULIA’S STEPPING STONES by her husband and filmmaking partner, Steven Bognar.
For Julia, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival held a special place in her heart. “Full Frame was a huge part of Julia’s life for many years. We would go every year, bringing students, or showing our films or just going to immerse in movies and community,” shared Bognar. It was only fitting that JULIA’S STEPPING STONES made its world premiere at the 2024 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, a place that had nurtured their work and spirits over the years. For Bognar, it felt like a homecoming and a beautiful way to honor Julia’s memory in a space she cherished.
JULIA’S STEPPING STONES takes viewers on a journey through Reichert’s life, from her early years and education to her passion for radio and her deep involvement in the women’s movement. The film explores her first venture into filmmaking with Growing Up Female, capturing the essence of her vibrant curiosity about the lives of others. Through a combination of personal photographs and film excerpts, Julia’s spirit shines through in this moving tribute to her life and work.
Now available on Netflix, JULIA’S STEPPING STONES offers a glimpse into the incredible life of a visionary filmmaker who dedicated her career to telling compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.
