Netflix Christmas Movie Under Fire for Mocking Nativity Scene and Song About Pregnancy

An animated Christmas movie on Netflix has been stirring up a bit of controversy over a scene that puts a modern twist on the classic Nativity story. In the film “That Christmas,” a group of children, led by a teenager named Bernadette, decides to jazz up the traditional story with some unexpected changes.

Instead of your typical Nativity scene, we see shepherds herding vegetables instead of sheep and the wise men are portrayed as three wise women. And in a particularly memorable moment, the young girl playing Mary belts out Madonna’s 1986 hit “Papa Don’t Preach” while holding up a watermelon as a stand-in for baby Jesus.

The humorous production takes a turn for the chaotic when the watermelon gets knocked out of the girl’s hands, splattering onto the audience and causing quite a commotion. And after the show, Bernadette gets some feedback from the adults in the audience who weren’t exactly thrilled with the unconventional take on the Nativity story.

Some viewers have expressed mixed feelings about the film, with Mary-Logan Miske from Students for Life of America calling out the movie for what she sees as a disrespectful portrayal of the Nativity. Others, like Blaze contributor Allen Mashburn, have criticized the film for what they perceive as pushing a “woke” agenda.

It’s worth noting that Netflix has not yet responded to the controversy surrounding this scene. Madonna, who’s no stranger to controversy herself, has long been vocal about her views on abortion and women’s rights. In fact, during an interview in 2019, she spoke out about her desire to see changes in the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion.

While opinions may vary on the film’s handling of the Nativity story, one thing is for sure—it’s got people talking. So whether you’re a fan of unconventional holiday movies or prefer to stick to the classics, “That Christmas” is definitely sparking a conversation this holiday season.
