Sesame Street has been a beloved and iconic children’s show for over 55 years, but changes are happening in the world of streaming. Today, December 13, 2024, it was announced that Sesame Workshop and Max (formerly known as HBO Max) will no longer be hosting episodes on the streaming service. Let’s dive into what this means and what we can expect going forward.

Back in 2015, PBS made the decision to no longer premiere Sesame Street first on PBS Kids. From season 46 onwards, new episodes and specials would first come out on HBO, and then later on PBS Kids. When HBO Max launched, the deal was adjusted to have episodes premiere there first, but they would still air on PBS Kids eventually. Fast forward to 2022, when Warner Brothers and Discovery merged into Warner Brothers Discovery, and many projects were removed from HBO Max, including hundreds of episodes of Sesame Street.

The future of Sesame Street on streaming platforms is uncertain. While season 55 will premiere on Max soon and remain until 2027, what happens after that is up in the air. However, there’s potential for other streaming services like Netflix and Apple TV Plus to pick up the show. Max has stated that they are focusing more on stories for adults and families, which means new episodes from Sesame Street may no longer be a core part of their strategy.

It’s a big change for a show that has been a staple for generations of children. What are your thoughts on this news? Let us know in the comments below!
