Best Movies of 2024: Top 12 Picks by Vanyaland
If I could sum up the year in movies in 2024, it would be a bit like quoting the iconic band Smash Mouth: “The hits just keep coming, and they don’t stop coming.” It was a tumultuous time for the film industry, which had faced challenges like COVID and strikes. But, despite the chaos, there were some sparks of hope. Warner Bros. is still recovering, Paramount now belongs to Larry Ellison’s children, and Disney is adapting to a new era post-Chapek. The streaming giants held steady, with Amazon leading the way in theatrical success, Netflix focusing on events and star power, and Apple TV+ having a quieter year.
The indie scene was where the magic truly happened. A24 had a standout year, releasing what many consider to be the best film of 2024. Even IFC Films surprised audiences with their great horror releases. Mubi, known for its ever-present podcast ads, had a fantastic year with films like “The Substance” that appealed to both arthouse fans and mainstream movie lovers. Watching Demi Moore’s transformation in “The Substance” was a unifying experience, blending different audiences together.
As we step into an uncertain future, I don’t have all the answers for what’s to come. This past year wasn’t the easiest, but there are always small joys to be found if you’re open to them. Engaging with art, community, nature, or simply seeing a great film can make life richer and more interesting. Get out there and experience something unexpected, whether it’s one of the twelve fantastic films listed below or just spending time with friends.
I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined me on this cinematic journey, as well as the amazing V team who make it all possible. Without further ado, here are my favorite films of 2024 and why you should check them out!
