AI-Generated Movies Premiere: My Experience
Last month, I had the unique opportunity to attend the premiere of the first commercially streaming AI-generated movies at the iconic Chinese Theater in Hollywood. As I sat there watching these innovative films, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own past experiences with film criticism.
When I was just 14 years old, I wrote a scathing review of a classmate’s movie for the school newspaper, criticizing the special effects that had been lovingly crafted by someone my own age. Looking back, I realize now that I had no idea what I was talking about and deeply regret the impact of my words. Fast forward 20 years, and here I am watching AI-generated movies with a different perspective.
These movies were not student films made with passion and care, but rather part of a pilot program by TCL, the world’s largest TV manufacturer. TCL has been venturing into the world of AI-generated content, aiming to monetize its free streaming platform, TCL+. The films I watched were the first of many AI-generated creations that will be available on TCL+ starting this week.
Before the screening, TCL executives outlined their strategy of using targeted advertising to fund their AI movie and TV projects, creating what they describe as a “flywheel effect” driven by advertising and AI. They emphasized their goal of providing a “lean-back binge-watching experience” for viewers who prefer a more passive approach to content consumption.
The films themselves were certainly technically impressive, showcasing the capabilities of AI-generated content. However, they did exhibit some common issues seen in AI productions, such as characters with dead eyes and unnatural movements. Despite these challenges, TCL remains committed to their vision of AI-powered entertainment and sees a bright future ahead for their content service.
Starting December 12, viewers can catch these AI-generated shorts on TCL+, offering a taste of what’s to come in the world of AI entertainment. From a dystopian sci-fi tale to a mountaineering documentary, these films showcase the creative potential of AI technology. While there may be some glitches along the way, the journey into AI-generated storytelling is just beginning, and TCL is at the forefront of this exciting new era in filmmaking.
