Kabuki Kimono Collection at the Ashmolean Museum – Explore the Exquisite Designs and History
A fantastic new exhibition is happening right now at the Ashmolean’s Textile Gallery, and you won’t want to miss it! Until December 2025, the gallery is showcasing a stunning collection of kabuki costumes worn by the talented actor Bandō Tamasaburō V. Known for his exceptional performances as a male actor portraying female roles on the kabuki stage, Tamasaburō has graced audiences with a wide range of characters over his illustrious career.
From court ladies and fairy princesses to courtesans, these intricately crafted kimonos highlight a variety of textile techniques, including weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and hand-painting. Adorned with cascading wisteria, cherry blossoms, golden peacock feathers, and swirling dragons, these beautiful costumes are a sight to behold.
Two of the most spectacular costumes featured in the exhibition were worn by Tamasaburō in the popular kabuki play ‘Love letters from the Pleasure Quarters’. Set in Osaka, this play tells a simple story of a lover’s quarrel between a merchant’s son and the glamorous Yūgiri. The lavish costumes worn by Tamasaburō in the role of the high-ranking courtesan Yūgiri are truly breathtaking, featuring intricate designs and exquisite craftsmanship.
Each of these kabuki kimonos is a true work of art, painstakingly handmade by skilled craftsmen. The process of creating these costumes involved close collaboration between the actor and the maker, resulting in unique and personalized pieces that bring each character to life on the stage.
If you’re a fan of kabuki theatre or simply appreciate the beauty of traditional Japanese textiles, be sure to visit the Ashmolean’s Textile Gallery to experience this incredible exhibition firsthand. The showcase is free to attend, so don’t miss this rare opportunity to see these stunning kabuki kimonos up close and admire the artistry behind each intricate detail.
