Limbani the Chimpanzee Finds New Home at Local Sanctuary After PETA Campaign
Exciting news for animal lovers! Limbani the chimpanzee has been rescued from the Zoological Wildlife Foundation in Miami and moved to the Save the Chimps sanctuary, thanks to the pressure campaign by PETA following the release of HBO Max’s Chimp Crazy docuseries. Limbani, who was torn away from his mother as an infant, spent eight years in solitary confinement before this rescue. PETA has pledged a donation for his lifetime care at the sanctuary, making him the 25th chimpanzee rescued by PETA from dire circumstances.
At the Zoological Wildlife Foundation, Limbani was kept in isolation, exploited for photo ops, and had dangerous public encounters. The roadside zoo received a warning from state authorities after Limbani bit a child in 2020. Despite instructions to stop public contact, evidence shows that the exploitation continued. Now, at Save the Chimps, Limbani will have the chance to connect with a surrogate mother, live in a lush habitat, and form relationships with other chimps, instead of being caged and used for profit.
PETA has facilitated the transfer of 24 other chimpanzees to accredited sanctuaries and continues to advocate for the bipartisan Captive Primate Safety Act, which aims to ban private ownership and breeding of primates for the pet trade. PETA’s $10,000 reward still stands for information leading to the rescue of other chimpanzees in roadside zoos or in the pet trade. If you have information about Limbani, Bow, Ricky, or other captive chimpanzees, please contact PETA.
