Netflix Documentary on Nonverbal Teen with Autism
A new documentary on Netflix is showcasing the powerful story of Makayla Cain, a teenager with autism who is discovering her voice in a whole new way. The 23-minute film, “Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World,” delves into Makayla’s journey as she navigates her unique challenges and triumphs.
Makayla has a rare form of autism that has made it difficult for her to communicate effectively throughout her childhood. But at the age of 14, she is introduced to letter board therapy, which helps unlock her inner thoughts and feelings. The documentary captures Makayla’s progress as she learns to express her poetry and intelligence with those around her.
“Before she knew how to letter board, we had no idea what she was thinking,” Makayla’s mom Mañana Cain shares in the documentary. “Having her communicate, it’s a beautiful thing, cause it’s like who is this child? And we’re still learning who she is.”
This heartwarming documentary won Best Documentary Short at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. “Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World” is set to premiere on Netflix on December 11, giving viewers a glimpse into Makayla’s inspiring journey of self-discovery and newfound expression. Don’t miss out on this touching and insightful story.
