Guerrilla Film Highlighting Afghan Women Protesters: Bread and Roses
Sahra Mani faced a big challenge when making her new documentary, Bread & Roses. Due to the risks of hiring a cameraperson and the inability to film in person, she had to get creative. The film delves into the world of women’s resistance in Afghanistan, showcasing the protests against the Taliban’s suppression of women’s rights.
Through a unique blend of cell phone footage, archival videos, and clips from hired camerapersons, Mani paints a vivid picture of the lives of three activists fighting for their rights in a rapidly changing Afghanistan. The title, Bread & Roses, draws inspiration from the protestors’ own slogan and pays homage to historical movements for women’s rights.
Since the Taliban rose to power in 2021, Afghan women have faced severe restrictions on their freedoms, including bans on education, employment, and public participation. Despite the risks, women continue to protest and resist the Taliban’s oppressive regime, often facing detention, torture, and abuse as a consequence.
Sahra Mani, known for her award-winning documentary A Thousand Girls Like Me, felt compelled to shed light on these women’s stories. Through Bread & Roses, she aims to keep the spotlight on the Afghan women’s resistance and ensure that the world does not forget their struggles. By partnering with notable figures like Jennifer Lawrence and Malala Yousafzai, Mani hopes to amplify these important voices.
The documentary weaves together a tapestry of cell phone videos, archival footage, and voiceovers to offer an authentic and raw look at life under the Taliban. By showcasing the strength and resilience of Afghan women, Bread & Roses serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight for basic rights and freedoms in the country.
Despite the challenges and risks involved in creating such a powerful documentary, Sahra Mani remains dedicated to amplifying the voices of Afghan women and shedding light on their resistance. Through Bread & Roses, she hopes to inspire audiences to take action and stand in solidarity with these brave women fighting for their rights.
