Review: Farrelly Brothers Christmas Movie Takes Santa to Hell
Dear Santa is a Christmas comedy that tries a little too hard to be funny and ends up falling flat. The story follows Liam, an 11-year-old who accidentally addresses his letter to Santa to “Satan,” who then offers him three wishes in exchange for his soul. Liam uses his wishes to impress a girl, help a friend, and fix his parents’ marriage, but things take a strange turn with a Post Malone concert, a fake cancer plotline, and a dark twist about Liam’s family.
The movie tries to mix humor that appeals to adults with a plot suitable for kids, but it misses the mark. Even Jack Black’s performance as a charming Satan can’t salvage the film. The jokes feel dated, the humor falls flat, and the overall tone is confusing. It’s hard to see who this movie was made for, as it seems to miss the mark for both kids and adults.
Despite some potential with its premise, the film fails to deliver on the laughs. The humor is too juvenile for adults, too crass for kids, and too unfunny for anyone looking for a good laugh. Even the moments that almost work, like an extended fart joke, drag on for too long. It’s a shame because Jack Black’s charisma could have carried the film if the jokes were stronger.
Dear Santa seems like a misstep for the Farrelly Brothers, who may have missed the mark with this one. With a confusing mix of humor, a lackluster plot, and a feeling of trying too hard, this film is best left unwatched. If you’re looking for a Christmas comedy to enjoy with your family, you may want to skip this one and find something more holiday-appropriate.
