Investigation launched into officer involved in arrest of Netflix actor

A Metropolitan Police officer is currently under investigation for potential assault after Reece Richards, known for his role in Sex Education, raised concerns about being injured during an arrest in west London. Richards shared on Instagram that after finishing a performance in Hairspray, he was mistakenly targeted by officers, who sprayed him with a liquid, threw him to the ground, and kicked him.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed that one officer is undergoing criminal investigation and potential gross misconduct, while another officer is being investigated for potential misconduct in connection with the incident. A video posted by Richards on social media depicted several officers detaining an individual.

Richards explained that he had witnessed a car crash and pointed out two suspects who had fled on foot to the police. However, instead of pursuing the suspects, the officers restrained him on the ground, exacerbating injuries to his back, ribs, and stomach. The actor expressed the traumatic nature of the experience, mentioning his mother’s distress nearby.

The Metropolitan Police mentioned they were pursuing a suspected stolen car with false plates before encountering Richards. They admitted to using pepper spray during the arrest and reported the incident to their Directorate of Professional Standards. Richards has accused the police of racial profiling in response.

The IOPC is currently investigating the use of force by the officers involved in Richards’ arrest. They mentioned that one officer is under investigation for common assault, potential gross misconduct, and another officer for potential misconduct. However, it is important to note that this investigation does not automatically lead to disciplinary or criminal proceedings.

Once the investigation is concluded, a decision will be made regarding whether any officers should face disciplinary action or if the case should be referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for further legal action.
