Viewers of the new Paramount+ show Landman are loving Billy Bob Thornton’s performance, but some are raising concerns about how the female characters are portrayed. The series is set in West Texas and follows a story of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs. It’s described as an “upstairs/downstairs” tale that explores the impact of the oil boom on our climate, economy, and geopolitics.

Billy Bob Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, an oil crisis executive on a mission to lead his company to success during the boom. He’s joined by Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, and Michelle Randolph. The show is created by Taylor Sheridan, known for his work on Yellowstone and its prequels, based on the documentary podcast Boomtown, co-created by Christian Wallace.

Three episodes have aired so far, and reviews are coming in. Currently, the show has a 75% average Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Popcornmeter rating of 65%. Some critics have praised the show for its witty dialogue but criticized its portrayal of women.

The Guardian gave Landman three out of five stars, noting that while it’s full of clever lines, its treatment of female characters is troubling. Despite this, the core values of the show make it compelling. NPR has also raised some concerns about the female representation in the show.

So, if you’re a fan of thrilling dramas with complex characters, Landman might be worth checking out. Just keep in mind the mixed reviews and make your own judgment!
