Prepare to Conquer the Challenge Once More as ‘American Gladiators’ Returns

“American Gladiators” is set for a comeback on Amazon Prime Video, bringing back the iconic athletic competition series from the 1990s. The revival will feature Contenders facing off against Gladiators in intense athletic challenges, culminating in The Eliminator obstacle course. The original series, a classic of 1990s syndicated TV, ran from 1989 to 1996.

The series is part of Amazon’s lineup of unscripted programs on Prime Video. Lauren Anderson, head of Brand and Content Innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed excitement about bringing back the enduring physical challenge format that engages families worldwide. Johnny C. Ferraro, the co-creator of “American Gladiators,” will executive produce the series. This revival follows previous versions like “Gladiators 2000” and a two-season-long revival hosted by Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali in 2008. International versions of the show, like the British “Gladiators,” have also seen successful revivals.

“American Gladiators” first aired in syndication in 1989, featuring male and female Contenders competing against Gladiators in various athletic competitions like Atlasphere, Joust, and Assault. The Gladiators, with names like Siren, Laser, Nitro, and Zap, would try to impede the Contenders from completing the challenges. Each episode culminated in The Eliminator, a challenging obstacle course. Winners would advance to a tournament round, concluding each season. The show was hosted by sports personalities such as Joe Theismann, Mike Adamle, and Larry Csonka.

Interest in the property has been reignited in recent years, with documentaries like ESPN’s “The American Gladiators Documentary” and Netflix’s “Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators.”
