Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions no longer available for purchase through Apple

Disney+ and Hulu have recently made a significant change by no longer accepting user subscriptions through the App Store. This decision is not about technology but rather about commission fees. Apple typically receives a 30% commission each time an iPhone or iPad user signs up for a subscription through the App Store. To avoid this fee, some services, like Netflix and Spotify, require users to subscribe directly through their websites instead of their iOS apps.

Both Disney+ and Hulu have updated their support pages to inform users that new and returning subscribers can no longer sign up for their services through Apple. However, existing subscribers who are currently paying for Disney+ or Hulu through the App Store will not be affected by this change. This adjustment aligns with a policy change Apple implemented in March 2022, allowing ‘reader’ apps like Netflix and Spotify to link to their websites for new signups.

It’s worth noting that this decision from Disney+ will render the service ineligible for Apple’s Video Partner Program. As a result, users will no longer be able to enjoy the integration of Disney+ and Hulu with features like Siri, AirPlay, and Universal Search.

Interestingly, this change in subscription methods comes on the heels of price increases for both Disney+ and Hulu. As of October 17, Disney+ raised its prices by $2, while Hulu saw a price hike of $1 to $2. Additionally, the services have initiated a crackdown on password-sharing, starting in late September.

While these adjustments may deter some users who prefer the convenience of subscribing through the App Store, Disney’s strategic moves are aimed at improving overall margins. By bypassing the App Store’s commission fees and implementing price hikes, Disney+ and Hulu are working to enhance their financial performance despite potential user reluctance to switch to direct subscriptions.
