Netflix to Debut ‘Sign Stealer’ Documentary on Michigan Football and Connor Stalions
The release of a documentary titled “Sign Stealer” by Netflix on August 27 sheds light on an alleged sign-stealing scandal within the Michigan football program. The focus of the documentary will include interviews with key individuals involved in the controversy, including former low-level staffer Connor Stalions. This documentary is part of Netflix’s series “Untold,” which explores various sports-related stories, with upcoming episodes delving into topics like the murder of Steve McNair and the conflict between Hope Solo and U.S. Soccer.
In the documentary, Stalions will provide his perspective on the sign-stealing saga that has garnered significant attention, portraying him as a central figure in the scandal. Despite the buzz surrounding the case, Stalions has refrained from engaging with other media outlets, making this documentary a unique opportunity to hear his side of the story.
The controversy surrounding the Michigan football program dates back to October last year when the NCAA initiated an investigation into alleged sign-stealing activities. Stalions was implicated as the mastermind behind a sophisticated operation that involved individuals attending games of future Michigan opponents to gather intelligence through recording their signs. While scouting opponents during games is within the rules, in-person scouting of future opponents is considered a violation.
As a result of the investigation, the Big Ten took action by suspending former Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh for the final three regular-season games. Harbaugh, who is now with the Los Angeles Chargers, has denied any knowledge of the sign-stealing scheme. Previously, he had also faced a school-imposed three-game suspension at the beginning of the season related to another NCAA investigation concerning impermissible recruiting practices.
Stalions, who was hired in May 2022 as a player personnel analyst, found himself at the center of the controversy and was subsequently suspended with pay by Michigan in October. Following a disciplinary review meeting in November, Stalions chose to resign from his position. Shortly after his resignation, Michigan was notified of potential disciplinary action by the Big Ten, leading to a three-game suspension for Harbaugh.
The release of the Netflix documentary promises to provide a deeper insight into the events surrounding the alleged sign-stealing scandal within the Michigan football program, offering viewers a closer look at the individuals involved and the repercussions of their actions.
