Park Hoon-jung Expands ‘The Witch’ Universe with ‘The Tyrant’ Series on Disney+

Director Park Hoon-jung is set to expand the universe of his successful action film series “The Witch” with the upcoming Disney+ action series “The Tyrant,” promising viewers a thrilling and dynamic narrative. The series, slated for release on August 14, is described by Park as an extension of “The Witch,” set within its vast universe.

“The Witch” series, which includes “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion” (2018) and its sequel “The Witch: Part 2. The Other One” (2022), garnered commercial success for its unique storyline featuring strong characters and captivating action sequences. “The Tyrant,” a forthcoming action thriller, delves into the realm of superpowers, centering on the pursuit to secure the final sample from the covert “Tyrant Program” conducted by Korea’s intelligence agency. This missing sample, a result of a transportation mishap, contains a potent drug capable of activating a superpowered gene.

Fans of “The Witch” series can expect to find familiar elements in “The Tyrant,” as highlighted by the director. However, the cast emphasized that the new series possesses its own distinctiveness compared to its predecessors, residing in the same world but telling a completely different story.

Actor Cha Seung-won, who plays a role in the series, described “The Tyrant” as a narrative unfolding in the west, in contrast to the eastern story depicted in “The Witch.” Despite this divergence, there is a possibility for the two worlds to intersect, adding an intriguing layer to the storyline.

For Park, known for his successful action films like “New World” (2013) and the “The Witch” series, “The Tyrant” marks his debut in television drama. Acknowledging the challenges of transitioning to the series format, Park expressed his admiration for the team involved in bringing the series to life.

The series boasts a talented cast, including Cha Seung-won, Kim Seon-ho, Kim Kang-woo, and Jo Yoon-su, with whom Park has previously collaborated. The director’s confidence in the actors’ abilities stems from their past collaborations and the trust built over time.

Amidst the action-packed scenes, the series also incorporates elements of tension and diverse narratives, promising an engaging viewing experience for audiences. With all four episodes set to air on Disney+, “The Tyrant” is anticipated to be a binge-worthy series that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
