New Green Lantern Series ‘Lanterns’ by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof & Tom King Shifts to HBO with Series Pickup
Lanterns, a redeveloped adaptation of the Green Lantern comic, is making a significant move from Max to HBO, having recently received an official series order. The creative minds behind this project include Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
This shift is part of a strategic decision to transition expensive scripted series from streaming services to linear networks. Notable examples of this strategy include big-budget series like the Harry Potter and IT prequel Welcome to Derry, which will eventually find their way back to streaming platforms.
The Lanterns series will follow the journey of new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan. The duo finds themselves embroiled in a dark, earth-based mystery as they delve into a murder investigation in the heart of America.
The road to bringing a Lanterns TV series to life has been a lengthy one. The concept of a Green Lantern series has been in development since 2019 under Greg Berlanti’s guidance. However, it wasn’t until October 2022 that the show’s focus shifted towards John Stewart and Hal Jordan.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared in May that the redeveloped series would be helmed by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King. This talented trio is now set to lead the project, which has secured an official series order at HBO.
Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios are backing the eight-part series, with Mundy taking on the role of showrunner. Lindelof and King will co-write the series, with all three serving as executive producers.
As of now, casting details for the series have not been disclosed. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Mundy, Lindelof, and King, highlighting the fresh perspective they bring to the Green Lantern narrative.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, are equally enthusiastic about the project. They emphasized the importance of Lanterns in the unified DC Universe, praising the characters of John Stewart and Hal Jordan and the original detective story that will unfold in the series.
