Jean Charles De Menezes’ mother urges all to watch Disney+ series about son’s tragic death

Maria De Menezes, the mother of Jean Charles De Menezes, a victim of a tragic incident in 2005, has spoken up about an upcoming Disney+ drama that sheds light on her son’s untimely death. In July 2005, 52 individuals lost their lives in Jihadi suicide bombings in London, followed by four additional failed bombing attempts a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately, amidst the chaos of a manhunt for the perpetrators, Jean Charles was wrongly identified as a suspect by the police and fatally shot at Stockwell station.

The new series, “Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles De Menezes,” not only covers the events leading up to the bombings but also delves into Jean Charles’s death and the police’s attempts to explain their grave mistake. Maria De Menezes has expressed her opinion on the four-part drama, mentioning the emotional impact of seeing her son’s death reenacted on screen.

During a recent screening event for “Suspect,” Maria De Menezes shared, “In my opinion, I think everyone should watch it.” Reflecting on the moment she received the devastating news about her son’s death two decades ago, she added, “I was not expecting that moment. It was terrible and then I started to shake. I sort of died then too.” Writer and executive director Jeff Pope was also present and emphasized the importance of this series for the family after 20 years of waiting.

Pope mentioned that he believes important lessons have been learned since the incident, but that such awareness was necessary back in 2005. “Suspect” aims to provide audiences in the UK with an opportunity to reflect on these tragic events and the repercussions they had. The series premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, April 30th, offering viewers a chance to explore this crucial chapter in recent history.
