Family of Jason Corbett Featured in Netflix Documentary Due to Lack of Justice
The family of Limerick man Jason Corbett, who was tragically killed by his American wife and father-in-law Molly and Tom Martens, recently participated in an upcoming Netflix documentary. The documentary, titled “A Deadly American Marriage,” is set to air on May 9th and took four years to make. It features interviews with the Martens family, who maintain they acted in self-defense, as well as Mr. Corbett’s children, Jack (20) and Sarah (18).
Throughout the interviews, Jack and Sarah fondly recalled memories of their father, emphasizing that they never witnessed any violent behavior from him towards Molly Martens. According to Netflix, the documentary delves into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Jason Corbett’s death, prompting viewers to reflect on the hidden truths beneath what seemed like a fairy tale life that ended tragically.
The tragic incident occurred eight years ago in Panther Creek, North Carolina, when Molly (40) and her father, Tom Martens (73), attacked Mr. Corbett with a paving stone and baseball bat as he slept in bed. The Martens family was initially convicted of second-degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to 20 and 25 years, but their convictions were later overturned on appeal. In a second trial, they were convicted of manslaughter and received a shorter sentence.
After serving prison time, the Martens family was released last year. Jason Corbett’s children from his previous marriage have been living in Limerick with their aunt and uncle since his passing. The Corbett-Lynch family explained that participating in the documentary was crucial to raise awareness about the challenges they faced within the judicial system and to ensure that victims’ voices are heard.
They expressed their hope that the documentary would honor Jason’s memory and advocate for justice, amplifying the voices of those who have been failed by the legal system. Despite their loss, the family emphasized the importance of speaking out on behalf of their father and brother, who valued connection and community engagement. By sharing their story, they aim to support other victims of injustice, promote resilience, and raise awareness about the complexities of the legal system.
