Tinder’s Upcycling Pop-up Event: Embracing Fashion for Gen Z
Cuffing season has come to an end, and as we gear up for “Hot Girl Summer,” Tinder is jumping into the mix with an experience that speaks to the Gen Z crowd and offers a space for users to connect in person. Their recent ExCycle pop-up at Tumbao in New York City combined spring cleaning, dumping old baggage, and embracing sustainability all under one roof.
Singles were invited to bring their exes’ clothing to the pop-up, where they could swap these preloved items for a fresh, curated fit. Attendees added their pieces to the Swap Rack and got help from stylists to pick out new items. They even had the chance to customize their finds with on-site embroidery and alterations specialists.
Devin Colleran, global brand director at Tinder, shared that the brand is always looking for new and interesting ways to connect with culture. This venture into the fashion space came from a desire to associate Tinder with positive stories, like turning breakup moments into something uplifting.
Partnering with sustainable fashion designer Sami Miró, Tinder aimed to give items a second life creatively. Miró, known for creating custom jackets with Nike for U.S. gymnasts at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, transformed clothes from influencers into bespoke outfits showcased at the event.
The pop-up also featured eco-friendly materials, cups, and decor, with an emphasis on celebrating confidence and self-discovery. Attendees had the opportunity to snap new profile photos at the Portrait Studio while showing off their upcycled fashion pieces.
Tinder’s signature pink color flooded the venue, but branding was kept minimal to create a chic fashion event with good vibes, music, and drinks. The focus wasn’t solely on dating or meeting romantic partners, but rather on providing a low-stakes environment to mingle and enjoy a cool experience.
As Colleran put it, the event was inspired by Gen Z’s desire for authentic in-person experiences. The positive reception and engagement exceeded Tinder’s expectations, hinting at a successful test that may lead to similar future events.
Overall, the ExCycle pop-up offered a unique space for users to connect, embrace sustainable fashion, and enjoy a fun event. The feedback and engagement were promising, showcasing the potential for more exciting experiences from Tinder down the line.
