Comcast predicts NBA will be key for Peacock streaming service
Comcast is gearing up to use the NBA as a “launch pad” for its streaming service, Peacock. The company is all-in on live sports rights and sees them as a key part of Peacock’s strategy for the future. This fall marks the start of an 11-year deal between Comcast and the NBA, giving Peacock an exclusive set of games to offer its subscribers.
During a recent earnings call, Comcast executives highlighted the importance of live sports programming for Peacock’s success. While Peacock did face losses in Q1, the numbers have improved compared to last year. The revenue for Peacock went up by 16%, reaching $1.2 billion, and the platform added over five million new subscribers thanks to a deal with Charter Communications.
Comcast President Mike Cavanagh mentioned that it’s hard to pinpoint when Peacock will become profitable, but the goal is to drive towards better monetization and scale over time. Acquiring the NBA rights is seen as a significant achievement that will help Peacock attract a new audience and grow its business.
Looking ahead, Peacock will become the go-to platform for Comcast’s live sports content, especially as the company plans to move away from linear cable channels. With 11 years of NBA and Olympics rights secured through 2036, Peacock is well-positioned to be a must-have streaming service for sports fans in the coming years.
