Max Introduces New Extra Member Feature to Crack Down on Password Sharing

HBO Max is cracking down on password sharing between households, taking a cue from Netflix and Disney+. They recently introduced a new feature called Extra Member Add-On, which allows users to pay a fee to share their subscription with someone who doesn’t live in the same home. This add-on costs $7.99 per month on top of the base subscription price, which ranges from $9.99 to $20.99 per month based on the plan you choose.
With the Extra Member Add-On, the additional member gets their own account, password, and profile, and they can only watch on one device at a time. Subscribers can only add one extra member to their account. This feature is exclusive to WarnerMedia subscribers and not available to Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle subscribers or those who subscribe through third-party providers.
Even though it’s only $2 cheaper than the ad-supported plan, the Extra Member feature allows the added member to access the benefits of the main subscriber’s plan. So, if the main subscription is for the Premium plan with 4K streaming, the Extra Member can enjoy those perks for the $7.99 price.
It’s expected that HBO Max will tighten restrictions on password sharing soon, prompting users to sign up for the Extra Member feature or get a separate subscription if they’re using an account from multiple locations. Let’s keep an eye on how this new feature impacts the streaming landscape.
