Betty Jo (Nance) Stevens: Columbus County News (CCN)

Betty Jo Stevens, a beloved member of the Whiteville, N.C., community, passed away on April 15, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on August 10, 1951, Betty Jo grew up in Cerro Gordo, N.C., and graduated from West Columbus High School in 1969. She was known for her close bond with her siblings, Linda Hayes, Gary Nance, Buddy Nance, and the late Larry Nance.

In 1970, Betty Jo married Larry Stevens, a U.S. Navy veteran, and they shared many happy years together until his passing in 2015. Betty Jo was a dedicated employee at Columbus Eye Associates for over three decades, where she earned a reputation as a highly respected member of the community. Her love for her family was evident in her role as a devoted mother to her children.

Outside of work and family, Betty Jo enjoyed cooking, visiting the beach, and attending services at Antioch Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Scott and Lisa Stevens; stepdaughter, Sonya Stevens Edwards; grandchildren, Keefer Edwards, Vann Davis, and Kennedy Jarret; and great-granddaughter, Hadley Davis.

A funeral service to celebrate Betty Jo’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Peacock Funeral Home Chapel. Following the service, Betty Jo will be laid to rest in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 1:00 – 2:00 pm on Wednesday at Peacock’s Chapel.
