Norman Lear’s ‘Clean Slate’ Season 1 Cancelled by Prime Video

Norman Lear’s show “Clean Slate” was recently canceled by Prime Video after just one season. The stars of the series, Laverne Cox and George Wallace, along with co-creator Dan Ewen, shared their disappointment in a guest column on Deadline. They described the cancellation as the end of a seven-year effort that disappeared in the blink of an eye.

The series, which premiered on February 6, was made up of eight episodes and was a true labor of love for the team. “Clean Slate” followed the story of Henry, a car wash owner in Alabama, who is excited to reunite with their estranged child after 17 years, only to find out that the child they thought was a son has transitioned into a proud and determined trans woman named Desiree, played by Laverne Cox.

Despite the cancellation, there has been no comment from Prime Video representatives regarding the decision. The show was initially pitched to Norman Lear as “Sanford and Daughter” by Cox and Wallace and was later greenlit by Amazon’s Freevee service in September 2022 after a year of development. Prior to landing on Amazon, the project spent some time in development at NBCUniversal.

Although Norman Lear, the well-known comedy legend behind classics like “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” has passed away, his legacy lives on through his final project. The series was co-executive produced by Cox and Ewen, along with Brent Miller from Act III Productions. George Wallace and Paul Hilepo were producers, and Ewen also wrote the pilot script for the show. The series was produced in association with Sony Pictures Television.
