If you’re a fan of the Japanese manga series Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, you’ll be excited to hear that Netflix is gearing up to release a live-action adaptation called BET. After a quiet announcement last year, the streaming giant has confirmed that the new series will be available worldwide on May 15th, and they’ve even given us a sneak peek at four first looks.
The cast is led by Miku Martineau as Yumeko, Rami Khan as Rex, Ryan Sutherland as Suki, Eve Edwards as Mary, Ayo Solanke as Ryan, Dorial Giordano as Chad, Clara Alexandrova as Kira, and Hunter Cardinal as Michael. The synopsis for the new series paints a picture of a boarding school for the global elite, where underground gambling holds the keys to power. When Yumeko, a mysterious transfer student, arrives, her gambling skills attract attention from the Student Council, putting her on a collision course with the school’s hierarchy.
For those unfamiliar with Kakegurui, it’s a popular Japanese manga series that made its debut in 2014. The story was later adapted into an anime in 2017 by the acclaimed studio MAPPA, with another season following two years later. Both seasons of the anime are currently streaming exclusively on Netflix. Interestingly, this live-action adaptation isn’t the first of its kind, as Japan released its own version in 2019, which is also available to stream on Netflix.
The new BET series has been developed by Simon Barry, known for his work on Warrior Nun, and will consist of 10 episodes directed by Jacquie Gould, Craig Wallace, and Joyce Wong. Filming took place in Toronto last summer, with Boat Rocker Studios handling production.
