Netflix documentary explores Jason Corbett killing in new detail
A new documentary about the tragic killing of Limerick man Jason Corbett by his American wife Molly Martens and her father a decade ago is set to hit Netflix screens next month. “A Deadly American Marriage” premiers on May 9th and features interviews with Martens, her father Tom, and Mr. Corbett’s children, Jack and Sarah.
Described by the streaming network as a chilling exploration of love and betrayal, the documentary promises to uncover the lingering questions surrounding that fateful night. Martens, 40, and her father Tom, 73, a retired FBI agent, were released from prison in North Carolina last June after serving over four years for the 2015 killing of Jason Corbett, 39, at their home in North Carolina.
In their original 2017 trial, the Martens were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to long prison terms. The court heard that the victim was fatally beaten with a baseball bat and a paving brick, with the prosecution arguing that the murder was driven by fear that Mr. Corbett would take his children back to Ireland.
After their conviction was overturned in 2020, the Martens accepted a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter and were released. Mr. Corbett’s daughter, Sarah Corbett Lynch, has since shared her experiences in her memoir “A Time For Truth,” shedding light on the abusive environment her stepmother created at home.
The Netflix documentary, directed by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell, promises to delve deeper into this tragic story. Stay tuned for more insights on this chilling case that has captivated the public’s interest.
