Slade discusses father-son relationship on MTV’s ‘Family Legacy’
Nathan “Slade” Smith, the son of crunk music pioneer Lil Jon, is making a name for himself in the music industry. At 26 years old, Slade is following his father’s footsteps by appearing on the second season of “Family Legacy,” a music docuseries now streaming on Paramount+.
In his episode, Slade talks about his close relationship with his father and his musical training. This episode serves as his formal introduction to Lil Jon’s fans and a tribute to his dad. Viewers get a peek inside Slade’s home recording studio, see his reactions to his father’s music videos, and even listen to his own musical single, “Feels.”
After graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in 2020, Slade has been co-producing songs with Lil Jon, like Saweetie’s “Get it Girl” and Ying Yang Twins’ “Twerkin in the Mirror.” Working with his dad can be challenging, but Slade finds it rewarding and educational. Lil Jon praises Slade for his initiative and fast learning, saying that he doesn’t have to hold his hand through the production process.
Growing up in Decatur, Slade’s interest in music began at a young age. He credits his dad for sparking his passion for deejaying and producing. From singing on his dad’s tracks as a toddler to deejaying weddings and parties as a teenager, Slade’s journey has been shaped by his father’s influence.
Slade’s experience touring with actress Zendaya taught him valuable lessons in showmanship and performance. Despite his initial shyness, he learned how to engage with the crowd and command the stage like his father. With a blend of talent and hard work, Slade is carving out his own path in the music industry, while honoring his father’s legacy along the way.
