WIE Suite Review of Apple TV+ Documentary “Number One on the Call Sheet” Focusing on Black Women

The recent event at the WIE Suite in NYC brought together a group of influential Black women to celebrate the release of the Apple TV+ documentary, “Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood.” Directed by Shola Lynch, the film highlights the resilience and audacity of Black women in the entertainment industry.

Featuring interviews with powerhouse actresses like Viola Davis, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, and Whoopi Goldberg, the documentary sheds light on the challenges these women faced in their careers. Despite the lack of opportunities and recognition, they persevered and broke barriers, paving the way for future generations.

During the event, guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, a screening of the film, and a panel discussion with Lynch, along with Lisa Price and Jessica Cruel. The atmosphere was intimate and filled with a sense of urgency to support and uplift one another in the industry.

The film showcases the emotional toll of being a trailblazer and highlights the importance of sisterhood and solidarity among Black women. From Hattie McDaniel’s historic Oscar win in 1940 to Halle Berry’s groundbreaking achievement in 2001, the documentary pays tribute to those who defied the odds and carved out their own paths.

Whoopi Goldberg’s story serves as a powerful example of perseverance and self-determination. By creating opportunities for herself and refusing to be limited by stereotypes, Goldberg became a trailblazer in her own right. Her journey is a testament to the strength and resilience of Black women in Hollywood and beyond.
