Netflix Releases ‘Adolescence’ for UK Schools
Netflix has partnered with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to make the hit drama series “Adolescence” available for streaming in all secondary schools across the country. This initiative aims to assist teachers, parents, and caregivers in guiding children through the challenges depicted in the show, which mirror real-life issues faced by young people every day.
In a heartfelt statement, Prime Minister Starmer shared his personal experience watching “Adolescence” with his own teenage son and daughter, emphasizing the importance of open discussions about changes in communication, media exposure, and peer interactions. He believes that encouraging students to watch the series and engaging in conversations about these topics is crucial for providing support in navigating modern challenges and addressing harmful influences.
The series release was accompanied by a roundtable discussion featuring Prime Minister Starmer, representatives from various charities including the NSPCC, Tender, and The Children’s Society, as well as the creators and producers of “Adolescence.” The four-part series will be accessible through the Into Film+ streaming platform and will be complemented by educational resources to aid teachers and parents in addressing the themes explored in the show.
Anne Mensah, Vice President of Content at Netflix UK, expressed pride in the impact that “Adolescence” has had in sparking important conversations and shining a light on the pressures faced by young people and parents in today’s society. The streaming platform is thrilled to offer the series to schools across the UK and collaborate with charity Tender to create resources that facilitate discussions on the show’s themes.
“Adolescence” premiered on Netflix on March 13, following the story of 13-year-old Jamie, played by Owen Cooper, whose life is turned upside down when he is accused of murdering his schoolmate. As the series unfolds, it becomes clear that Jamie is indeed guilty, but the reasons behind his actions remain shrouded in mystery, primarily linked to his involvement in toxic online communities perpetuating violence against women.
Co-creator and star of “Adolescence,” Stephen Graham, expressed the show’s intention to provoke conversations and address the crisis portrayed in the series. The creators hope that bringing the show into schools will encourage meaningful dialogue between students and educators, ultimately leading to impactful discussions among peers about the relevant issues raised in the show.
