News of the World (2020)
Tom Hanks in ‘News of the World’.
Bruce W. Talamon/Universal Pictures
A slower, more contemplative take on the genre, News of the World stars Tom Hanks as a retired Civil War captain who travels through Texas, reading the news to townsfolk for a dime a piece. His journey is interrupted when he finds a young orphaned girl, Johanna (Helena Zengel), who has been raised by the Kiowa tribe and is now without a home. Along their treacherous journey through the wilderness, they form an unlikely bond and navigate a world that is rapidly changing — one struggling to find its way into the modern era.
While not the traditional shoot-’em-up, gun-slinging Western, News of the World is a thoughtful exploration of companionship, trust, and resilience in a world that is constantly shifting beneath their feet.
