Expanding Season 3’s Queer Universe in ‘Wheel of Time’

Showrunner Rafe Judkins wants fans of The Wheel of Time to appreciate the LGBTQ+ representation in the popular show. With three seasons under its belt, the series has been intentional about showcasing diverse characters and relationships. Judkins sees it as a privilege to bring this aspect of Robert Jordan’s fantasy world to life on screen.

In his adaptation for Prime Video, Judkins has seamlessly integrated LGBTQ+ characters and storylines into the fabric of the show. Unlike many other TV shows, The Wheel of Time doesn’t go out of its way to highlight these themes with special episodes or coming-out narratives. Instead, queerness is simply a part of the fantasy universe created by Jordan.

“We made a conscious decision to exclude homophobia from The Wheel of Time,” Judkins explains. By removing this element, the show can focus on exploring different cultural perspectives and relationships without negative stereotypes. In the books, queer relationships are widely accepted and rarely face criticism, mirroring the show’s approach.

In the world of The Wheel of Time, queerness is woven into the fabric of society, from personal identities to cultural practices. This allows the show to create a fantasy world where LGBTQ+ representation feels natural and organic. By embracing diversity in this way, The Wheel of Time sets itself apart in the high fantasy genre and offers a refreshing take on inclusivity.
