Netflix adds HDR10+ support for Samsung TVs: What about LG?

Netflix is stepping up its game by adding HDR10+ support, a rival to Dolby Vision, on its platform. This is excellent news for Samsung TV owners, as they will be able to enjoy enhanced picture quality. Those with Netflix Premium accounts will have access to HDR10+, which will be available on 50% of eligible viewing hours. By the end of the year, Netflix aims to have HDR10+ support on all HDR content.

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision offer superior quality compared to regular HDR, providing a wider dynamic range and scene-by-scene tone mapping. This means viewers can expect fewer blown-out highlights and better overall picture quality. While Dolby Vision is more widely supported, HDR10+ has been gaining traction and is now available on major streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV+, in addition to Netflix.

Despite the growing popularity of HDR10+, don’t hold your breath for LG and Sony to jump on the bandwagon. LG expressed skepticism about supporting the format, stating that they don’t believe in it. Similarly, Sony has shown little interest in adding new formats to their TVs. While HDR10+ may be a welcomed addition, it is still considered an alternative to Dolby Vision rather than a replacement.

Netflix’s approach to supporting HDR10+ involves asking production companies and studios to provide the Dolby Vision version, with HDR10+ support added later in the tech pipeline. This means that any content with HDR10+ will also have Dolby Vision support. Samsung TV owners, especially those with budget models, can look forward to an image boost with HDR10+ support, offering improved picture quality on their devices.
