Hazelight’s Split Fiction Potential: From Game to Film
Hazelight Studios’ popular new video game Split Fiction might soon be making its way to the big screen. According to Variety, top studios are currently in a bidding war for the rights to adapt the game into a film. Story Kitchen, known for their work on adaptations like Tomb Raider and the Sonic movies, is in the process of assembling a cast, writer, and director to attract potential buyers. At this time, neither Story Kitchen nor Hazelight, specifically founder and creative director Josef Fares, have made any official statements.
Despite the lack of confirmation, it seems likely that Split Fiction will get the Hollywood treatment. The entertainment industry is eager to adapt popular games for film or television, and Split Fiction has been a commercial success. The game, which is played entirely in co-op mode, follows two aspiring writers, Mio and Zoe, who find themselves trapped in each other’s stories by a machine designed to steal ideas. Mio ends up in Zoe’s fantasy world, while Zoe is transported to Mio’s sci-fi adventure, and they must work together to escape. The premise of the game suggests that it would translate well to a fun and engaging film.
Split Fiction has received positive reviews and sold over 1 million copies shortly after its release, a number that doubled within a week. For publisher EA, this latest success follows other ventures to bring their games to the screen, with a Mass Effect series in development for Prime Video and plans to adapt Hazelight’s 2021 hit It Takes Two.
