Austin Abrams in Talks to Star in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Reboot

Zach Cregger is getting ready to shoot his fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise this summer in Europe, and there’s buzz that Euphoria’s very own Austin Abrams might be the leading man. Abrams is reportedly in initial discussions to headline the reboot, marking a potential reunion with Cregger, who directed him in Weapons, the highly anticipated follow-up to Barbarian.

Details on the plot are being kept tightly under wraps, but sources suggest that the film will have some elements of a wilderness survival thriller. Cregger collaborated on the script with Shay Hatten, known for John Wick: Chapter 4. In a recent statement, Cregger expressed his excitement, saying, “I’ve been a longtime fan of these games and bringing this incredible title to life is a true honor.” The Resident Evil reboot is already scheduled for release on September 18, 2026.

Aside from Euphoria, Abrams has made a name for himself with roles in The Walking Dead, This Is Us, and Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark. He also appeared alongside Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Wolfs.

Regarding Weapons, studios were eager to secure the project, with the coveted final cut privilege going to New Line Cinema, who outbid other contenders. New Line’s president and CCO, Richard Brener, praised Cregger’s talents, highlighting his ability to provide audiences with a powerful cinematic experience. Planned to be a mysterious tale set in a small community after a group of kids vanish overnight, Weapons stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, June Diane Raphael, Cary Christopher, and of course, Austin Abrams. Originally due in theaters on January 16, 2026, the film will now premiere on August 8, 2025, following positive test screening feedback.
