Apple losing $1 billion annually on streaming service, report indicates

Apple is making big moves in the world of streaming entertainment, but it seems like they might need to adjust their strategy a bit. According to a recent report by The Information, Apple is actually losing more than $1 billion a year on its streaming service. That’s a pretty hefty sum!

Since Apple TV+ launched back in 2019, the tech giant has been shelling out over $5 billion a year on content. However, they did manage to trim that budget by about $500 million last year. Even with hit shows like “Ted Lasso”, “The Morning Show”, “Shrinking”, and “Severance”, Apple TV+ still trails behind competitors like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video in terms of subscribers.

While Apple hasn’t disclosed the exact number of Apple TV+ subscribers, estimates suggest they hit around 40.4 million by the end of 2024. And it’s not all bad news for Apple TV+ productions – they’ve racked up an impressive 2,500 nominations and 538 wins.

As the streaming wars heat up, companies are getting creative with how they package their services to attract viewers. Apple TV+ is part of a bundle offered by Comcast that includes Peacock and Netflix for $15 per month, whereas on its own, Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month in the U.S. Apple also offers a bundle with services like iCloud and Apple Music under the Apple One program.

It will be interesting to see how Apple navigates the ever-evolving streaming landscape in the coming years. Despite the financial challenges, they seem committed to producing quality content for their viewers.
