Annaleigh Ashford playing a serial killer’s daughter in “Happy Face”: New true crime series
Tony award-winner Annaleigh Ashford recently shared her experience playing Melissa G. Moore, the daughter of notorious serial killer Keith Jesperson, in the new true crime series “Happy Face.” Ashford emphasized the importance of telling Moore’s story and perspective in an interview with “CBS Mornings.”
Inspired by Moore’s real-life journey of discovering her father’s dark secret as a teenager, the Paramount+ series delves into her advocacy for both families of perpetrators and victims. Keith Jesperson, known as the “Happy Face” killer, confessed to murdering eight women between 1990 and 1995. Dennis Quaid portrays Jesperson in the show, which focuses on storytelling rather than graphic violence.
As part of her preparation for the role, Ashford had the opportunity to read letters that Moore’s father had sent her from prison. Despite feeling uncomfortable, she found the experience insightful for understanding her character. Unfortunately, the letters were lost in a fire at the showrunner’s home, prompting a moment of reflection for Moore on their significance.
Moore’s involvement as an executive producer and cameo appearance in the pilot episode of “Happy Face” underscored her commitment to honoring the victims and their families while narrating this chilling story. Ashford highlighted the importance of preventing retraumatization of those affected by the crimes, a common oversight in true crime portrayals.
Keith Jesperson continues to serve multiple life sentences in jail, while Moore’s resilience and advocacy for victims remain central to the series’ narrative. As viewers tune in to follow the intricate web of emotions and revelations in “Happy Face,” Ashford’s portrayal of Moore promises to shed light on a complex and harrowing chapter in true crime history.
