Upcoming WNBA Comedy Series ‘The W’ Set to Air on Peacock
Two-time WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike is teaming up to bring a new comedy series focusing on the life of a WNBA player to Peacock, according to Deadline’s Peter White.
The half-hour show will follow a talented rookie WNBA player and her inexperienced agent as they navigate the highs and lows of the professional basketball world. Inspired by Ogwumike and her agent Allison Galer, the series promises to offer a glimpse into the unconventional path they chose together.
With GLOW creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive at the helm, The W is sure to bring an entertaining twist to the world of women’s sports. This isn’t the first time Mensch and Flahive have delved into this realm, as GLOW was a hit fictionalized portrayal of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.
Drawing from Ogwumike and Galer’s real-life experiences, The W will give viewers a humorous and insightful look into the world of women’s professional basketball. Ogwumike, a former player for the Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks, has since transitioned to a successful broadcasting career as an NBA and WNBA analyst for ESPN.
Galer, on the other hand, has grown her client portfolio significantly since teaming up with Ogwumike. Representing players like Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, Kelsey Mitchell, and Elizabeth Williams through her firm, Disrupt the Game, Galer’s career has been on the rise.
The fact that a major streaming service like Peacock is developing a series centered around the WNBA is a testament to the league’s increasing popularity. With record attendance and viewership in recent years, the WNBA’s growth shows no signs of slowing down. And with the continued interest in women’s basketball at the college level, the future looks bright for the sport.
