Moana 2: Record-Breaking 27.3 Million Views on Disney+ within 5 Days

Disney’s “Moana 2” has been a hit on Disney+, with 27.3 million views in its first five days on the platform. This makes it the third-highest launch for a theatrical film on Disney+ and the best launch for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title since “Encanto” in 2021.

The success of “Moana 2” follows the film’s impressive box office performance, grossing $1.05 billion globally and becoming the third-highest grossing film in Walt Disney Animation Studios history, just behind the two “Frozen” films. The original “Moana” also did well, grossing $643.3 million in 2016.

Disney+ has played a significant role in the popularity of the “Moana” franchise. Since its launch in 2019, “Moana” has been one of the most streamed titles on the platform, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, “Moana” has amassed 1.4 billion viewing hours on Disney+, equivalent to watching the film 735 million times.

The decision to create “Moana 2” was influenced by the growing popularity of the franchise on streaming platforms. Bob Iger announced in 2024 that plans for a Disney+ series had been redirected to a theatrical sequel due to the increasing demand from fans.

The enthusiasm for “Moana 2” was evident in its box office success, particularly in the U.S., where it grossed $225.4 million over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend, breaking the previous holiday record held by “Frozen II.” Fans can look forward to more Moana content, with a live-action remake of the original film, starring Dwayne Johnson, scheduled for release in July 2026.
