Monica Aldama from ‘Cheer’ Joins Mockumentary Project

If you’re a fan of the Netflix hit Cheer, you’ll be excited to hear that Monica Aldama, the former Navarro College coach, is now attached as an executive producer to a new mockumentary called Stumble. NBC has ordered a pilot for the show, which is being written by Liz and Jeff Astrof, industry veterans and siblings.

Stumble will delve into the competitive world of junior college cheerleading, a subject that Aldama knows well thanks to Cheer, where her team’s journey to a national championship captivated audiences. The docuseries not only showcased the squad’s impressive athletic abilities but also shed light on the personal struggles some team members faced.

Cheer was a massive success, running for two seasons from 2020 to 2022 and even snagging an Emmy award for outstanding unstructured reality program in 2020. The show’s popularity soared, with Saturday Night Live even creating a parody sketch inspired by it.

Unfortunately, Cheer faced controversy when former star Jerry Harris was arrested and charged with serious crimes in 2020. This led to a cloud of scandal hanging over the show, with further accusations of misconduct later made against Aldama and the Navarro administrators.

Despite these challenges, Aldama has continued to push forward in the cheerleading world. USA Cheer launched an investigation into her conduct, which resulted in a temporary suspension that was later lifted. Aldama eventually announced her retirement from coaching, but not before pursuing legal action against those she felt had damaged her reputation.

It’s clear that Aldama’s journey from Cheer to Stumble has been filled with highs and lows, but her dedication to the cheerleading community remains a central focus. As we await the pilot of Stumble, fans are eager to see how this new project will shine a light on the competitive and sometimes controversial world of cheerleading.
