Creator of Andor Discusses Lucasfilm Censoring Explicit Language

Andor, the Star Wars TV show that has been lauded as the most mature yet, is gearing up for its second and final season on Disney+ this April. Fans have pointed out the gritty language used in the series, from references to the “bastards” of the Empire to a notable utterance of the word “shit” in the galaxy far, far away.

In particular, a scene in the season finale featuring Maarva (Fiona Shaw), Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) adopted mother, stands out for its emotional impact. Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that the original script called for Maarva to declare, “Fuck the Empire,” in a speech meant to incite rebellion. However, after extensive discussions with Lucasfilm, it was decided that this language did not align with the established tone of the Star Wars universe and was ultimately omitted from the final cut.

Gilroy expressed his respect for the collaborative process with Lucasfilm, noting that while there was a difference of opinion, it was a constructive dialogue. Reflecting on the experience, he acknowledged that the studio’s decision was the right one. Despite the absence of strong language in the show, fans can expect the same high-stakes drama and excitement in Andor Season 2, premiering on April 22 on Disney+.
