Prime Video Cancels TV Remake of ’90s Cult Classic Movie After One Season
Amazon Prime Video recently made the tough call to cancel their TV remake of the ’90s cult classic movie, Cruel Intentions, after just one season. The series, which premiered in November 2024, didn’t quite hit the mark for viewers, earning a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Drawing inspiration from the 1999 movie of the same name, which itself was based on an 18th-century French novel called Dangerous Liaisons, the show followed the story of two step-siblings, Caroline and Lucien, navigating power dynamics and reputation at their elite college in Washington DC. Despite a talented cast including Catherine Sarah Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith, the series failed to capture the same magic as its predecessor.
Although the show had been in development as far back as 2021, with a series order given in April 2023, it seems that the TV adaptation just didn’t resonate with audiences. Interestingly, this isn’t the first attempt at bringing Cruel Intentions to the small screen—previous efforts in 1999 and 2016 also failed to gain traction.
For those who are still curious, Cruel Intentions season 1 is available for streaming on Prime Video. If you’re looking for more TV shows to add to your watchlist in 2025, be sure to check out our guide to the best new shows and our picks for the top shows currently on Prime Video.
