Review: ‘Another Simple Favor’ Sequel Lacks Lust and Vigor
Paul Feig’s return to the director’s chair was inevitable after the success of “A Simple Favor.” The sequel, “Another Simple Favor,” reunites Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively for another whirlwind adventure filled with mystery and murder. While the ensemble is expanded, and the setting shifts to an island off Italy’s Amalfi Coast, the snarky charm of the original film seems to be missing in this cartoonish follow-up.
Writers Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis waste no time plunging the audience back into the lives of Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively). The duo’s witty banter resumes as they navigate through a series of dramatic events, culminating in a dead body at a wedding celebration in Capri.
Despite the lack of a warm-up, Kendrick and Lively effortlessly slip back into their roles, creating a palpable chemistry on screen. Their psychological warfare is engaging, peppered with sharp zingers that keep the audience engaged. However, the sequel fails to capture the same intrigue as its predecessor, with its excessive focus on flashy visuals detracting from the core mystery.
While “Another Simple Favor” may not have the same allure as “A Simple Favor,” it still offers an entertaining romp through Stephanie and Emily’s mischievous escapades. Kendrick shines as Stephanie, while Lively dazzles in a variety of killer looks, adding depth to her enigmatic character. Although the film struggles with pacing and depth, the central duo remains a highlight.
In the end, “Another Simple Favor” may not be perfect, but it delivers a fun and thrilling ride for fans of the original film. Feig’s dedication to the characters of Emily and Stephanie shines through, making it a worthwhile watch despite its flaws.
