Neil Druckmann Reveals the Reason Spores Return in The Last of Us Season 2
In the latest trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 show on HBO, the showrunners, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have confirmed that spores are making a comeback after their absence in Season 1. This exciting news hints at a new level of intensity for the upcoming season.
For those who may not be familiar, in the video games, the cordyceps infection spreads through spores, requiring characters to wear gas masks for protection. However, in Season 1 of the TV show, spores were replaced by tendrils, creating a more horrifying and cinematic effect. Clickers in Season 1 were seen sprouting terrifying tendrils, mimicking the way mushrooms connect through a root-like network.
The decision to switch from spores to tendrils was driven by practical considerations. Using spores would have meant the main stars, like Pedro Pascal, wearing gas masks constantly, which could have detracted from the suspense and tension. Tendrils also offer a more menacing and visually striking portrayal of the infection.
During a recent interview at SXSW 2025, Neil Druckmann shared that The Last of Us Season 2 will feature an escalation in both the number and types of infected, as well as new ways for the infection to spread. The trailer for Season 2 reveals a hint at the return of spores, signaling a new chapter in the story.
Actress Kaitlyn Dever also discussed her role as Abby in Season 2, expressing curiosity about the audience reaction to her character. HBO’s plan to extend The Last of Us story beyond a single season shows their commitment to exploring the rich narrative of the game.
With Season 3 still uncertain, the focus is on Season 2, designed with a natural break point after seven episodes. The return of spores promises to add a new layer of suspense and intensity to the highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us.
