“Deli Boys on Hulu: A Genre-Bending Blend of Comedy, Crime, and Conviction”

Hulu’s new series “Deli Boys” is breaking boundaries with its unique blend of comedy, crime, and heartfelt storytelling. The stars of the show, Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, and Poorna Jagannathan, recently sat down with TheWrap to discuss how the series challenges the stereotypes of South Asian characters in entertainment.

Saagar Shaikh initially thought “Deli Boys” would have a darker, more dramatic tone similar to shows like “Breaking Bad” or “Succession.” However, the series surprised him by infusing humor into its story, creating a unique and entertaining vibe. Poorna Jagannathan described the show as a mix of heart, drama, and comedy that defies traditional genre categorizations.

The series follows two Pakistani American brothers, Raj and Mir, played by Saagar Shaikh and Asif Ali, as they navigate the unexpected twists of taking over their father’s deli empire, which includes a drug front. Poorna Jagannathan plays their auntie, Lucky, who introduces them to the realities of the family business.

Asif Ali, known for his roles in “Agatha All Along” and “Shrinking,” was drawn to “Deli Boys” not only by the diverse South Asian cast but also by the show’s comedic core. He appreciated the opportunity to showcase a different side of South Asian representation on screen through humor and wit.

Saagar Shaikh, who drew from personal experiences growing up in a gas station family, found a connection to his character Raj. His own family background added depth to his portrayal of a brother taking on the responsibility of running the family business.

While the characters in “Deli Boys” face intense challenges in the drug trade and local mafia, the show touches on universal themes of family, legacy, and the struggles of immigrant children trying to make their parents proud. As Ali pointed out, the pressure to succeed and stay true to their roots resonates with many immigrant families and their children.

“Deli Boys” presents a fresh and dynamic take on familiar themes, blending humor and drama in a way that keeps viewers invested in the story. The show’s talented cast and engaging storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of streaming entertainment.
