Burning questions about Gemma, Helly, Mark, and the maze of hallways in “Severance”
“Severance” has kept audiences hooked with its mysterious and intricate storyline, especially as Season 2 unfolds. The show revolves around Lumon Industries, a workplace that erases employees’ memories of their personal lives while on the job. With the inner and outer worlds of the characters colliding, viewers are left with burning questions about the fate of Mark, Helly, Dylan, Irving, and now Gemma.
In the recent episode featuring Gemma’s reappearance, portrayed by Dichen Lachman, new characters add to the drama. Sandra Bernhard and Robby Benson join as a Lumon nurse and doctor evaluating Gemma’s situation. As Mark attempts to save his once-presumed-dead wife from the clutches of the corporation, secrets come to light and tensions rise.
When it comes to the mind-boggling maze of hallways on set, the cast had their work cut out for them. Director Ben Stiller revealed that Adam Scott’s maze runs are all too real. Stiller confirmed, “That’s Adam running, for real. He was doing his full-on best Tom Cruise impersonation.” The intricate maze, intentionally confusing for the characters, also proved to be a challenge for the actors. Scott, in particular, had to refuel with bananas and Gatorade during the intense shoot, clocking in what could amount to miles of running along the constructed hallways.
As Scott shared, even seasoned actors like himself and Patricia Arquette found themselves disoriented amidst the maze. The ever-changing layout, particularly around the macrodata refinement office, resulted in dead ends reminiscent of a scene from “The Shining.” Navigating the maze proved to be a task in itself, adding to the immersive experience of the show.
