Significant Increase in Sports Content on SVOD Platforms
Streaming entertainment fans, exciting news alert! According to Gracenote, a trusted source for content data, four out of the five top subscription video on demand (SVOD) services have amped up their sports offerings. That’s right, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, and Paramount+ have collectively boosted their sports programs by a whopping 72% in the recent quarter.
Ever since Gracenote dropped their first Data Hub release back in October 2024, sports content has been on the rise across streaming platforms. From exclusive NFL games to WWE RAW events to US Open tennis matches, sports fans have more to cheer about than ever before. Impressively, Disney+ and Netflix have taken the lead by increasing their sports programming by 471% and nearly 100%, respectively. And don’t worry, Apple TV+ is gearing up to join the game as the new MLS and MLB seasons kick off and live games hit the airwaves.
Bill Michels, Chief Product Officer at Gracenote, shared some insights, saying, “Live sports programming continues to be a key driver of user growth, retention, and engagement for streaming services.” And let’s not forget about the power of metadata – details like synopses, scores, highlights, and imagery can enhance the user experience and keep fans engaged long after the final whistle blows.
Disney+ has made a splash in the sports scene by adding select ESPN programming, putting them in second place with 33% of available sports content, just behind Amazon’s 35%. Netflix holds strong with over 23% of sports programming. Gracenote also noted a rise in French content on Disney+ and a drop in content from India, making France the third-biggest producer with 5.6% of the total content.
So, whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or just enjoy catching a game or two, it looks like your favorite streaming services have got you covered. Game on!
