the cinematography award.

In the second half of 2024, Taron Egerton’s airport thriller Carry-On stole the show on Netflix with a whopping 137 million views. On the other hand, the Oscar contender Emilia Pérez lagged far behind with only 1.5 million views.

As we gear up for the Academy Awards ceremony, Jaques Audiard’s musical leads the pack with 13 nominations but falls to 1,778th place out of 8,686 features viewed on Netflix from July to December last year. It’s important to note that Netflix only has rights to stream this film in the US and UK, limiting its availability.

Netflix’s ‘What We Watched’ report, released on February 26, highlighted some other top performers. The Mark Wahlberg-Halle Berry thriller The Union followed closely behind Carry-On with 131 million views, while Jeremy Saulnier’s thriller Rebel Ridge and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F captured 129 million and 97 million views respectively.

Not surprisingly, animated films also had a strong showing, with The Grinch, Trolls Band Together, and Sing leading the pack. Squid Game Season 2 dominated the series category with 87 million views, even though it only premiered on December 26. Non-English language content also played a significant role, with Norwegian tsunami drama series La Palma taking the lead with 52 million views.

In total, Netflix subscribers binge-watched more than 94 billion hours of content during this period—a 5% increase from the previous year. Going forward, Netflix plans to provide more detailed engagement reports along with their quarterly earnings reports.

It’s worth noting that no single title accounted for more than 1% of total viewing on Netflix, showcasing the platform’s diverse range of film and television offerings.
